In addition to societal costs, victims suffer long-term losses in earnings and occupational attainment. Some victims are physically disabled as a result of physical wounds. If the victims have no insurance, long-term health issues can also lead to more financial difficulties. Victims also can suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder and other mental problems.
