The American police system can historically be traced to England, under the rule of King Alfred the Great, initiated in the latter part of the ninth century. The movement from the rural farming areas to urban industrialized communities led to the creation of the London Metropolitan Police Department in 1829 . This Department became the model of policing for the United States. In 1845, New York combined its day watch and night watch into one police department, thereby creating the first police department in the United States.
