The attraction of the Moon causes tides on Earth. Because of friction, tidal action slows the rotation of Earth. What happens to the angular momentum of the Earth-Moon system, and does this affect the motion of the moon?
What will be an ideal response?
Since there are no external torques, the angular momentum is conserved. Since the Moon revolves around Earth in the same direction as Earth rotates, this means that the Moon's angular momentum about the center of mass of the Earth-Moon system has to increase.
