You are caring for a confused patient with poor hygiene and hepatitis A. He has been incontinent of stool. What are the implications?

What will be an ideal response?

Hepatitis A is contagious. A vaccine is available and health care workers are at high risk so should be vaccinated. It is your responsibility to protect yourself and others by practicing Standard Precautions, the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, and proper hand hygiene. The environment should be properly sanitized and incontinence products disposed of properly. Assist the patient with hand hygiene as well.
