Use marijuana as an example to discuss the differences between explanatory and constructionist theories in understanding deviant behavior. How would these two approaches to studying deviance look at changes to marijuana's status?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but should explain that explanatory theories of deviance are concerned with explaining why deviance does (and does not) occur. Explanatory theories try to explain deviant behavior objectively, focusing on those who do the deviant behavior. Explanatory theories assume deviant behavior is caused by many factors, including genetics and biology. For example, an explanatory theory may suggest that people are biologically predisposed to use marijuana. Constructionist theories of deviance are more concerned with the process by which people define and classify behaviors. Constructionist theories concentrate more on those in power, and those who set the rules that define deviance in the first place. Regarding marijuana, constructionists might focus on how drinking alcohol is often viewed as socially acceptable, while marijuana is not. Why have those in power determined that one substance is inherently deviant (even criminal), while the other is not?
