In an acidic solution, why is the hydroxide ion concentration lower than it is in pure water?

What will be an ideal response?

Neutral water begins with an equal concentration of hydronium and hydroxide ions. As the water is acidified, more hydronium ions are added. Many of these additional hydronium ions react with the hydroxide ions forming water. This diminishes the number of hydroxide ions.
