Describe and explain the different leaf shapes found on the plants that dominate in the desert, tropical rain forest, and boreal forest. Briefly explain the reasons for these different shapes.
What will be an ideal response?
Desert plants such as mesquite and creosote drop their leaves to survive in a dormant state. Other desert plants have small, wax-coated leaves, which limit water loss. Succulent plants have no leaves and store water within their stems. The trees of the tropical rain forest are commonly deciduous with broad leaves to capture limited sunlight in the dense canopy. Boreal forests are dominated by evergreen trees with needle-shaped, wax-coated leaves that can withstand the intense cold and drought of winter.
