Briefly discuss why science instruction may be challenging to students with disabilities
What will be an ideal response?
Science instruction may be challenging for students with disabilities because of some learner characteristics and instructional demands of science. The student characteristics that can increase the difficulty in learning science include: limited cognitive abilities, difficulty reading and comprehending content, limited ability in writing and math, inadequate study skills, and inability to maintain attention to task for periods of time. Instructional demands include: inability to engage effectively in class discussions that are frequently part of the text or lecture approach to science teaching; textual materials may contain vocabulary that is too difficult, content that is unfamiliar, and graphics and illustrations that may be too abstract.
