A traditional Web application runs on a single computer or a group of privately owned computers. Such computers are powerful enough to serve a certain number of requests per minute and can provide an acceptable response time for Web requests. If a Web site or Web application suddenly becomes more popular, the increased traffic can overwhelm a Web server, and the response time of the requested pages will increase from the overload. On the other hand, much of the server's capacity is unused when demand is low.
By contrast, if the Web site or Web application is hosted in a public cloud, additional processing and computing power is available within the cloud. If a Web site suddenly becomes more popular, the cloud can automatically direct more individual computers to serve pages for the site. If the site loses popularity, the cloud will scale down the number of servers to reduce the cost of service. The Web site might share the cloud servers with thousands of other Web sites of varying sizes and memory. Cloud computing is popular for its "pay-as-you-go" pricing model.
