Packaging protects and promotes the product and is important to a small business owner as well as to the customers. Packaging can make a product more convenient to use or store and can reduce spoiling or damage. Good packaging makes products easier to identify, promotes the brand at the store, and influences customers in making buying decisions.
A better box, wrapper, can, or bottle can help create a "new" product or market. Sometimes, a new package improves a product by making it easier to use, such as reclosable plastic containers for motor oil, stand-up tubes and flip-open caps for toothpaste, or zipper-closure bags for cheese or sliced meat. Packaging can also improve product safety, as when drugs and food are sold in child-proof bottles and tamper-resistant packages.
Sometimes variations in packaging are a last resort when everything else has been tried.
