Discuss how the economy affects the police

What will be an ideal response?

The state of the economy holds a number of implications for the police. In general, as a country undergoes modernization (i.e., it becomes economically developed, or industrializes itself) crime rates show an increase. The majority of the offenses that fuel this increase are property crimes, mainly because there is much more in terms of property to steal. In advanced industrial societies (such as the United States) property crimes make up a larger proportion of total crime than violent crimes. At the same time, economically developed countries are also likely to professionalize their police forces into bureaucracies that focus on better record keeping. Thus some of the increase in crime can be attributed to the police doing a better job of documenting their activities.
