What accounts for American children's physical inactivity and why should we be concerned about this issue?

What will be an ideal response?

Recent research shows that about 50% of American children do not get the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to rigorous exercise per day. Unfortunately, even the American school system does not promote the recommended levels of physical activity per day for children. Only 8% of the states require the recommended 30 minutes of physical exercise per day. Experts believe that teachers and administrators are under such pressure to ensure high academic achievement scores on standardized tests that they are afraid to allot time during the school day for physical education. Another concern is that in the elementary schools there are often unprepared classroom teachers assigned to teach physical education. The risks associated with children's inactivity are high. Exercise has been found to promote physiological and motor development, emotional development, and brain development, as well as academic learning. Physical fitness is also associated with self-esteem, confidence, and (in some cases) ethnic identity.
