Describe the steps in PASSION and how this strategy is useful

What will be an ideal response?

Answers should include the following steps:
• Pause when you meet a word you don't know.
• Access long-term memory and your inner dictionary to check for possible meanings: Have you seen or heard this word before? Can you recall its meaning?
• Survey the word's structure. Check its root, its prefix, and its suffix for clues to its meaning.
• Synonym play. Try to find a word that means the same thing, especially in the unknown word's context, including synonyms that have the same part of speech.
• Investigate the context. What clues do the word's neighbors give you about the unfamiliar word's meaning? Is its meaning restated in some way? Does the word appear again with different neighbors that you know?
• Outsource. If your internal mental work doesn't yield the word's meaning, try resources outside your self, like a dictionary or a friend.
• Note it down. Write the word on a 3X5 card with its meaning, part of speech, perhaps a drawing to represent the word's meaning, and a sentence using it on the opposite side for later reference.
PASSION is a strategy that can help students grow their vocabulary and content area knowledge.
