Describe defensible space as explained in your text
What will be an ideal response?
Defensible space as a crime prevention approach is workable and to a great extent successful. The term defensible space can be traced to a conference held in 1964 at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Two sociologists and two architects, along with police officers from the St. Louis Police Academy, discussed physical features that produced security in public housing. The defensible space concept provides residents of public housing a milieu of security from crime. Areas of defensible space include lobbies, hallways, playgrounds, and adjacent streets. The four elements of defensible space, territoriality, natural surveillance, positive picture of locality, and environment, are all perceived to influence disorder and crime in the area.
