Outline how the cut system works when placing horses.

What will be an ideal response?

To place a halter or performance class, contestants must rank horses from top to bottom. It is usually best to divide the horses into pairs and have a top pair, a middle pair, and a bottom pair. A maximum of 50 points is awarded for correct placement of a class. The cut system, which assigns cuts to each pair of horses (1 vs. 2, 2 vs. 3, and 3 vs. 4), is typically used to determine scores. When a contestant places the horses exactly as the judge did, no points are deducted. If not, the amount deducted for placing differently from the judge is based on the relative difference in the animals being judged. Therefore, if two animals are very similar, the cut is small and the point deduction will be less than when there is a clear distinction between horses. In the latter case, the cut is larger and more points are deducted_
