Joint attention, or sharing the attention of an object or event with another person, is also an issue for many individuals with ASD. Joint attention, according to the National Research Council (2001) involves coordinating attention between people and objects.Understanding that other people have intentions and attentions that are different from their own and can be shared verbally or non-verbally with their communicative partner is challenging for individuals with ASD.Children with autism have difficulties orienting and attending to a social partner; shifting gaze between people and objects or sharing emotional states with another person; following the gaze and point of another person; and being able to draw another person’s attention to objects. “The emergence of joint attention signifies true social understanding and provides the infrastructure for social communication” (Rollins, Campbell, Hoffman, & Self, 2016, p. 2).Joint attention implies an active, shared experience (Boutot & Myles, 2011).Joint attention is difficult for an individual with ASD.
