Bernard and Helena had a baby two months ago. However, they are unsure of some of the emotions they are experiencing. What are some of the possible emotional responses to pregnancy by mothers and fathers, and what should they be concerned about?
What will be an ideal response?
Students' answers may vary.
Emotional fluctuations are common due to changes in family structure, time demands, fatigue, inexperience, hormonal changes, and so on. They can vary from temporary responses to long-term depression. If emotional fluctuations are severe or hamper a mother's ability to deal with daily tasks, Bernard and Helen should see a professional (a doctor or therapist); postpartum depression can be aided through medication and counseling but should not go untreated. Failure to treat postpartum depression can extend its effects for many months. Fathers may also experience depressive symptoms, particularly if the mother is experiencing depression.
