Summarize the conclusions of the authors of the book The Bell Curve regarding a general factor of cognitive ability (“intelligence”). Why are these conclusions controversial?
What will be an ideal response?
A general cognitive ability does exist, and IQ tests measure it most accurately. IQ scores
match what people mean when they say someone is “smart.” IQ scores are stable, and properly
administered IQ tests are not biased against social, ethnic, or racial groups. Intelligence is
between 40% and 80% heritable. Critics argue that the authors did not present a balanced view of
alternative theories of intelligence, such as those of Gardner.
