There are several recommendations for providing counseling to Arab and Muslim clients. List and describe at least four recommendations.

What will be an ideal response?

Address and reduce barriers for mental health service utilization (e.g., mistrust of the professional, religious beliefs about the causes of mental issues, fear of racism and discrimination, language barriers, differences in communication, other issues of culture and religion); to reduce Arab/Muslim clients’ apprehension about counseling/therapy, therapists should carefully explain what can be expected from therapy. An orientation to therapy should explain the role of the therapist and the client. Therapists should also show an interest in learning about Arab American culture and values and respect for the client’s religion and worldviews; many Arab/Muslim Americans would most likely respond best to a therapist with a directive style, offering concrete advice for specific concerns in the beginning of therapy; clinicians should consider including family with any form of treatment, if only including them indirectly. Clinicians should not encourage family members to openly express anger toward each other because such confrontations might challenge the family structure and honor system; clinicians should not criticize or challenge the Islamic religion or its tenets; clinicians should not encourage the open expression of feelings against family members; clinicians should take a few minutes to warm up before delving into the business of the appointment. A client might be offered tea; clinicians should conduct a self-assessment to determine their attitudes and feelings toward Arab/Muslim Americans
