Explain why research on emotion has focused on fear.
What will be an ideal response?
Researchers knew from animal studies that the hypothalamus has primary control over the autonomic system and that it produces a variety of emotional expressions, such as the threatened cat's hissing and bared teeth and claws. Stimulation of the hypothalamus in Heath's patients produced general autonomic discharge and sensations such as a pounding heart and feelings of warmth, but it also evoked feelings of fear, rage, or pleasure, depending on the location of the electrode in the hypothalamus. Animal research on this well-defined circuit allowed for detailed investigation.
