Estrogen (or estradiol) is secreted from the female gonads or ovaries. Its target cells are the female sex organs, bones and the body as a whole. Its major functions are: it promotes follicular development; it governs development of female secondary sexual characteristics; it stimulates uterine and breast growth; it enhances pubertal growth spurt; and it promotes closure of the epiphyseal plate.
