What factors determine whether or not we will learn from a model, according to Bandura’s theory? Choose one example of behavior learned through modeling from the case and explain the influence of these factors.
What will be an ideal response?
Factors that determine whether or not we learn from a model include the characteristics of the model, the characteristics of the observer, and the consequences of the behavior being modeled. In all of the examples, Joe is the observer and Blake is the model. We are more likely to model high status and powerful people, which Blake would be in Joe’s eyes because he is his father. Children are more likely to learn from models than adults because they lack status and power, as is true here. If one takes the example of Joe charming his way out of punishment, one can see that he believes that he can do it and be rewarded because his father is sometimes rewarded with affection by Evonne for similar behavior. Likewise, Blake is not punished for his sloppiness and so Joe imitates his behavior, thinking that he won’t be punished either.
