Behavior settings theory has implications for social work assessment and intervention. It suggests that patterns of behavior are specific to a setting and, therefore, that we must assess settings as well as individuals when problematic behavior occurs. Behavior settings theory also suggests that the place where we first learn a new skill helps re-create the state necessary to retrieve and enact the skill. When assisting clients in skill development, we should pay particular attention to the discontinuities between the settings where the skills are being learned and the settings where those skills must be used.
