How have communicable diseases affected jail operations during recent years?
What will be an ideal response?
Blood-borne and airborne pathogens are now a serious consideration within most jail facilities. Concerns regarding jail security and the prevention of communicable diseases are integral to most jail facilities as these diseases affect inmates, staff, and the outside community simultaneously. Communicable diseases found in jails include hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, measles, and rubella. To ensure that both staff and inmates are sufficiently protected, jails must have a written exposure plan that includes the engineering of physical facilities that help isolate identified pathogens, work practices that control the spread of pathogens, the availability of personal protective equipment, routine staff training, the availability of appropriate vaccines, and detailed records of training provided and vaccines available.
