At certain times during childhood, negative experiences or the absence of appropriate stimulation are more likely to have serious and sustained effects on development than at other times. The developing brain is vulnerable, and trauma and neglect can impact the brain's capacity. Cortisol, a hormone that increases under stress, can destroy brain cells and lessen the brain density. Family challenges such as substance abuse, trauma, maternal depression, etc. can have harmful effects on the developing brain. Young children in high-stress situations for extended periods of time may have trouble paying attention, remembering, or having self-control.
