Alan injures his back severely. When he goes to the doctor, the doctor gives him a choice as to whether he thinks he needs an opioid drug. Briefly describe the benefits and risks Alan faces if gets this prescription.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. A sample answer follows. If Alan gets the prescription, the benefit is that he will get pain relief because opioids reduce pain just as the body's endorphins so. However, the risk is that Alan runs a high risk of becoming addicted to the opioid because the way the drug makes people feel good is addictive. For this reason, there is a severe epidemic of opiate abuse in this country.
