The question highlights that the creative initiatives would not have been possible if
McDonald left it to any of its headquarters (in the USA or otherwise) to determine what other
people want and, subsequently, ‘imposes’ it on them. Global companies need to build trust
and understanding with their local target groups and for them to just standardize
communications and products or services would just mean that more ‘caring’ and listening
companies will take their place. Companies also have their brand to look after and cannot just
pretend to be ‘politically neutral’ when in fact their decisions demonstrate that they are not
neutral (as demonstrated with the Palestinian issue). However if they are not neutral it is
important that they are seen to be on the side of justice and reflect due concern for human and
environmental issues.
