To what extent is community policing and problem solving now practiced in local police agencies in the United States, and to what extent is related training provided?
What will be an ideal response?
According to a survey by the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), police agencies with a community policing component now employ about 88 percent of all local police officers. A close examination of survey data reveals that:
• about 7 in 10 local police departments (including about 9 in 10 departments serving a population of 25,000 or more) have a mission statement that includes a community policing component;
• a majority of agencies serving 50,000 or more residents actively encourage patrol officer involvement in problem-solving projects;
• most departments serving 25,000 or more residents, including more than 90 percent of those serving a population of 100,000 or more, used geographic beat assignments for patrol officers;
• most departments serving 100,000 or more residents included such projects in the performance evaluation of officers;
• about half of all local police officers are employed by a department that actively encourages officers' involvement in problem-solving projects.
