Compare and contrast the effectiveness of the immune response to bacterial and viral infection.
What will be an ideal response?
Both pathogens are foreign and thus have antigens, therefore they each stimulate both branches of the immune
response. The humoral response is more effective at eliminating bacterial infections than viral infections because
bacteria typically do not have self antigens. The cell-mediated immune response is more effective at eliminating
viral infections than bacterial, because viruses infect and therefore alter self cells, and it is altered self cells that
stimulate cytotoxic T cells.
