In the nanotechnology world, top-down manufacturing is where machines, or other
systems, are used to create things or items with small features. For example, the
manufacture of the current microprocessor chips requires the use of circuits with paths
of fewer than 50 nm. In bottom-up manufacturing, the assembly starts with the smallest
particles, such as molecules that are combined or arranged to create a new material or
characteristic. This often takes the form of modifying cells and similar structures.
In this realm, research is being undertaken in molecular self-assembly, whereby molecules
