What are the advantages and disadvantages of content analysis?

The strengths of content analysis are that it is: virtually unobtrusive, and cost effective. It can provide a means to study a process that occurs over a long period of time and that may reflect trends in a society. However, it may be difficult to located appropriate unobtrusive messages relevant to the particular research questions. Content analysis is limited to recorded messages. This method relies on existing content rather than creating our own. You are limited to records that someone else thought were worth preserving. Content analysis is ineffective for testing causal relationships between variables. Researchers must resist the temptation to infer such relationships. Content analysis is used to say what is present, not why it is present.
