What recommendations does your textbook make for the effective use of eye contact by a
speaker?
What will be an ideal response?
In this culture, eye contact is encouraged. Studies have shown that speakers who use
direct eye contact have more credibility, and listeners learn more from them. It is
suggested that you establish eye contact with your audience before you say anything,
maintain eye contact during your opening sentence, and establish eye contact with
people throughout your audience, not just in some areas. Do not look over the heads of
the audience and do not break eye contact with your audience by turning away when
using visual aids.
