Julius II was known as the “Warrior Pope,” and he spent long periods in the field leading troops in an effort to gain back territory for the Papal States. This put him at odds with many rulers of the day. However, his artistic commissions were many and varied, and the careers of many artists were solidified because of their work for this pope—Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante, among others.
