A group of diseases in which bone resorption exceeds deposit. Matrix remains normal, but bone mass declines. Most often see in aged, postmenopausal women. Estrogen plays a role in bone density, so when levels drop at menopause, women run a higher risk. Additional risk factors for this disease are petite body form, insufficient exercise to stress bones, diet poor in calcium and protein, smoking, hormone related conditions, immobility, males with prostate cancer taking androgen-suppressing drugs.
