A parent comes to you and shares that her youngest child was diagnosed with ADHD. The mother is trying to decide whether or not she will put her child on medication. Without conveying a position of personal bias, what information might you share about the benefits and costs (pros and cons) of giving prescription drugs to children with ADHD?

Approximately 3% of school-age children (ages 6 to 18) are taking some type of drugs for ADHD. Advocates of Ritalin and other prescribed drugs claim that the drugs have positive short-term effects, such as improved social behaviors. For example, children with ADHD, who take prescription drugs, are more cooperative, attentive, and compliant. There is some evidence certain drugs for ADHD also improve memory, planning, and inhibition. Critics of using drugs to treat children with ADHD point to the increased heart rate and higher blood pressure as some of the risks. Also, some drugs for ADHD can be associated with interference with growth rate, insomnia, weight loss, and nausea. Some of these side effects can be controlled by adjusting the dosage of the drug(s). Critics of drug therapy site research findings showing that behavioral therapies are more effective in treating behaviors associated with ADHD than drugs. Our text authors conclude that even if children are on drug therapies, it is still important to make sure children with ADHD also receive the social and academic skills they need to be successful.
