Stomata and their surrounding guard cells are affected by conditions other than just water. Describe these other factors

What will be an ideal response?

Carbon dioxide levels within the leaf affect the stomata, as when the carbon dioxide levels within the leaf drop precipitously, photosynthesis cannot continue. Guard cells actively pump potassium ions in, and water follows by osmosis, and vice versa. Temperature and light also affect stomatal opening and closing. Further, a plant hormone, abscisic acid, affects the concentration of calcium ions, and also potassium ions. Some plants exhibit a daily rhythm to the opening and closing as well.
