Describe some of the criticisms of narrative therapy.

What will be an ideal response?

On the other hand, narrative therapy has been criticized for being too closely linked to social constructivism. Critics have argued against the social constructionist premise that there are no absolute truths, but rather only socially sanctioned points of view. In addition, opponents object to the conceptualizing psychotherapy as a discourse and to the notion that psychotherapy is a cultural narrative that locates problems within people. Another criticism of narrative therapy is that the school has tended to produce “gurus.” Guru-type psychotherapists present their own particular point of view, while not being very charitable to the founders of the traditional schools of psychotherapy. They also value clients’ perspectives and expertise over those of the therapist. Criticisms of narrative therapy have also stressed its lack of clinical and empirical studies to validate its many claims.
