Explain some of the consequences of our high rates of incarceration
What will be an ideal response?
• Incarceration may have severe social consequences for communities and the families that make up those communities.
• Children who have a parent in prison, are at a greater risk of suffering financial hardship and reduced supervision and discipline.
• Children of convicts are more likely to become involved in delinquent behavior, likely due to the deterioration of the family structure.
• Our high rates of incarceration also deny one of the basic rights of American democracy—the right to vote—for many felons. This has a disproportionate impact on minority groups, weakening their voice in the democratic process.
• Today, about one in every 33 African American men is behind bars, versus one in every 205 white men and one in every 79 Hispanic men.
• More black men are behind bars than are enrolled in the nation's colleges and universities, and this has a ripple effect on their communities and on the next generation of kids, growing up with their fathers in prison, will certainly be with us for at least a generation.
