Identify and discuss the cultural shift that must occur in an organization in order for teams to be successful

What will be an ideal response?

Sherriton and Stern (1997) said that the following cultural shifts must occur:
From hierarchical to flat: organizations must change their decision making and power
structures from ones that are centralized to decentralized; in other words, distribute power
and authority throughout the organization.
From fragmentation to cohesion: cultures that had previously segmented different factions of the organization from one another (e.g., management and workers; accounting
and distribution) must now become comfortable with these groups being thrown together.
From independence to interdependence: as has been discussed in the definition of teams,
individual organizational members will no longer be working on projects in singular,
isolated ways; now their processes and products will be interlinked with other
organizational and extra-organizational members.
From competition to cooperation: many organizations tend to breed competition among
co-workers as a means of motivating them to work harder; however, a team-based culture
must replace the ethic of competition with one of cooperation as team members will need
to rely on one another, build trust, and increase cohesiveness to have an effective and
satisfied team.
From tried-and-true to risk taking: when individuals work in relative isolation from one
another they tend to go with what they know works best and works best for them;
however, moving into the realm of teams means that diversity of thought, process, and
execution increases, and therefore so does the need to break out of old habits and take
risks on ideas, processes, and products.
