Why is it necessary to use a code such as 8?to?14 to encode data bits before recording them on a CD?

What will be an ideal response?

Eight?to?fourteen encoding (or modulation) is not absolutely necessary. However, it provides a cost?effective way of maximizing the number of data bits that can be stored on a CD. A data?recording code should have certain properties if it is to be efficient. For example, you want to store the maximum number of data bits per
code bit. In this case, 14 bits are used to encode 8 data bits. The 8?to?14 bit encoding ensures that there is no DC component in the recorded data sequence (i.e., the average value is 0). This makes the signal processing easier. Moreover, it is a run?length limited code which ensures that there are sufficient transitions to enable
the data clock to be reconstructed from the data. That is, it is a self?clocking code.
