Language factors play a key role n reading disability:
• Deficits in oral language are a major characteristic of low-achieving readers.
• May have difficulty following a story, show little interest in verbal activities, and have trouble with word retrieval.
• Syntax may be similar to that of a younger child.
Verbal concept development may also be deficient. Upon entering school, they may not be able to name colors, letters, or days of the week.
• May have limited vocabularies and difficulty with listening comprehension.
• Language delayed may not have the necessary development for learning phonemic awareness when it is presented in kindergarten and first grade.
• Will need help developing necessary language skills.
