In their letter to the KPMG CEO, the four Senators refer to the sales practices as representing a “massive fraud”. Discuss whether or not you agree with their claim.

What will be an ideal response?

While the alleged sales practices represent an inappropriate and deceptive treatment of customers for
the employees’ personal gain, most would not agree with the assertion that it represented a “massive
fraud.” While over 5,300 employees were fired by Wells Fargo over the years involved for their actions,
the bank employed over 270,000 employees at the time. So, only a small percentage of Wells employees
were involved in the scheme. While Stumpf ultimately had to step down from his Chairman and CEO
role, there was no evidence that the fraud was being orchestrated from the top. More importantly, the
amounts involved were quite immaterial. Thus, it would be difficult to describe the actions as “massive
fraud.”
