Stages six through ten examine the dissolution of relationships. Stage six,
differentiating, occurs when people seek their own identities apart from the dyad. Here people
might pursue separate interests. Stage seven, circumscribing, is when the dyad experiences a
decrease in both the quantity and the quality of their communication. However, dissatisfaction
is not openly expressed at this point. Stage eight, stagnating, is when growth has ceased and
communication has subsided. The relationship exists in name only. Stage nine, avoiding,
involves less contact and less communication. The final stage, terminating, can be a quick or
long process.
