ACSM's recommendation for frequency is 2-3 nonconsecutive days per week. The recommended intensity involves lifting enough resistance to fatigue target muscles after 8-12 repetitions. The recommended time (duration) is 8-20 repetitions per exercise per set and between 2 and 4 sets for each exercise. NOTE: Resistance and repetitions should be adjusted for strength training (higher intensity and lower repetitions) versus endurance training (lower intensity and higher number of repetitions). The type of exercises for enhancing muscular strength and endurance should be resistance exercises based on exercises that target more than one muscle group (shoulder press, curl-ups, squats, etc.) and should include exercises for all major muscle groups.
