What will be an ideal response?
In September 2016, the Pew Research Center Poll found that for the first time in 45 years fewer than half of Americans (49%) support the death penalty. Forty-two percent of respondents told Pew they oppose capital punishment, the highest percentage of opposition since a May 1966 Gallup poll found that 47% of Americans opposed the death penalty. Six in 10 respondents stated that the death penalty does not deter serious crimes. Fifty percent of individuals believed that minorities are more likely than whites to be sentenced to death although 41% said that whites are equally as likely as minorities to be sentenced to death. Seventy-one percent said that there is a risk that the innocent will be executed, a view endorsed by 84% of individuals opposing the death penalty and 63% of individuals supporting the death penalty. In an interesting response 90% of individuals endorsing the death penalty believe it is morally justified, a view shared by only 26% of individuals opposing the death penalty.
