Marcus delivers a presentation, but he fails to use any gestures. You have been asked to coach

him in order to improve this area. What suggestions would you give to Marcus?

What will be an ideal response?

First, Marcus could simply focus on his everyday conversation. Does he gesture? If he
doesn?t, he can begin to practice using gestures in everyday conversation. If he does, he
should simply start thinking of his presentation as a conversation. In focusing on his
messages, his gestures will naturally flow out of it. As he begins to gesture, he needs to
do it with purpose and confidence. The gestures need to be big enough to be seen.
However, they should not be so big that they become a distraction. Next, he should be
careful of using the same gesture over and over again. He should practice using
different kinds of gestures that clearly coincide with what he is saying. Finally, he
should consider his audience, the formality of the speaking situation, and the
culture-based expectations of his audience so he can decide on the most appropriate
gestures for his specific audience.
