Smoking is a major concern for the general health as well as periodontal health of a patient. Smoking affects the onset and progression of periodontal diseases; smoking is an established risk factor for inflammatory periodontal diseases. Smoking cessation should be a part of the treatment of a periodontal patient. Smoking also has an effect on the general healing of tissues following periodontal surgery, especially healing of soft tissue grafts.
