Describe the strengths and weaknesses of sociological theory in explaining addiction.

What will be an ideal response?

The theory examines factors outside the individual that influence internal experiences and behaviors. The theory is transferable across diverse cultures and opens the door for multicultural considerations by examining a client’s macroenvironment. The theory requires counselor to examine their own culture and its impact on the counseling process and recognizes the ever-changing nature of societal beliefs, norms, and values. Weaknesses: Does not provide direct intervention strategies for treatment. Additionally, it is difficult to instill systemic change and change the values and norms of an entire group. Lastly, considerations of individual factors and internal experiences are necessary, as external factors are not the sole explanation for addiction. The theory must be taken together with biological and psychological models of addiction.
