What is the primary disadvantage of application-level gateways?

What will be an ideal response?

The primary disadvantage of application-level gateways is that they are designed for a specific protocol and cannot easily be reconfigured to protect against attacks on other protocols. Because application-level gateways work at the Application layer (hence the name), they are typically restricted to a single application (e.g., FTP, Telnet, HTTP, SMTP, or SNMP). The processing time and resources necessary to read each packet down to the Application layer diminish the ability of these firewalls to handle multiple types of applications.
