What are the assumptions made by anomie and strain theories?

What will be an ideal response?

All social strain theories assume that humans are naturally social and altruistic and that society serves to corrupt human nature. This view of human nature can be seen as a reaction to the early forms of biological and psychological explanations found in the work of biological positivists, such as Lombroso and Hooton, introduced earlier in this text. Social strain theorists view society as being characterized by a consensus over values, norms, and laws. However, according to Merton, one’s position in the social structure does influence certain interests and values. These theorists imply that there is some conflict between different groups in society that is usually the result of social class and competition that is characteristic of capitalist societies.
